The home of the child Yodelmis Furones Matos was left in ruins in Baracoa, Guantánamo, after a tree fell on the roof in the early morning during Hurricane Oscar, leaving him severely injured and in critical condition due to a traumatic brain injury.
On the social media platform Facebook, the local outlet Primada Visión published images of how the house looked and assured that it will soon provide more details about the case of the little boy, who is currently recovering in the province of Santiago de Cuba.
The accident left the child unconscious, reported the official media outlet Cubadebate.
Yodelmis, who lost consciousness after the impact, was rescued in critical condition and urgently transferred to hospitals in Baracoa and Santiago by a multidisciplinary team and the Air Force, according to the Ministry of Public Health.
Currently, the child is hospitalized at the Southern Pediatric Hospital, where he is receiving specialized care and is making good progress.
The passage of the hurricane through Guantanamo territory left behind stories like that of several residents in the village of Carrizal, in the municipality of Imías, who saved their lives on the night the storm unleashed its full fury upon their land.
According to testimonies shared by activist Yamilka Laffita -Lara Crofs-, those Cubans climbed onto the roof of one of the houses, where they remained all night under the relentless rain, but were safe from the floods.
The official press has reported that thousands of people were rescued following the unprecedented floods that devastated and completely isolated towns in the municipalities of Imías, San Antonio del Sur, and Baracoa.
For more than a week, rescue operations have continued in search of missing families, following the mudslides and rising rivers and dams in Imías and San Antonio del Sur, according to reports from residents.
A week after the impact of Oscar, the government has only confirmed the deaths of seven people, six in San Antonio del Sur and one in Imías.
However, the accounts of those affected cast doubt on the figures provided by the authorities. Residents of both localities have stated that the reality is much more critical and that the deaths and disappearances greatly exceed what has been reported.
