A man who was injured on Tuesday when the balcony of his home in El Vedado, Havana, collapsed has died shortly after in the hospital.

The victim, identified as Iván Ordaz, a 56-year-old engineer, had recently purchased the apartment and was in the process of renovating it. The residence is located on the third floor of a building on 1ra Street.

The journalist Mario J. Pentón from Martí Noticias spoke with a family member who requested to remain anonymous.

"He was an excellent person, the support for his mother and his brother, who has a special condition," he revealed.

"He was taken to the Calixto García hospital, but there was nothing more that could be done. He was a good man, and his family is devastated by the tragedy," he added.

Iván Ordaz was the father of three children who live in the United States, Canada, and Germany.

The video taken after the collapse went viral on social media. It showed the man lying on the ground among the rubble, complaining of severe pain and asking not to be touched.

The neighbors in the area quickly mobilized to help him, but he was groaning the entire time and was unable to move on his own.

Building collapses are common in Old Havana and Centro Habana, but recently they have also been occurring in El Vedado, the famous and exclusive neighborhood that years ago was known for its striking mansions set along wide sidewalks shaded by lush trees.

In June, three people were injured when a balcony collapsed onto the El Tablazo café, located on 1st Street, between C and D.
