People are collecting tomato paste from the ground in a central street of Santiago de Cuba

The scarcity forces Cubans to take advantage of food that has fallen to the ground, regardless of hygiene or quality, to survive.

A sorrowful scene has once again highlighted the severe food crisis faced by the Cuban people. On Saturday, in Santiago de Cuba, several individuals were seen collecting tomato puree that had been spilled on the street.

The embarrassing incident occurred on the central Yarayó street, where two women, three men, and a young boy eagerly bent down to collect the liquid with their bare hands before pouring it into containers and plastic bags.

None of them cared about the risk of having an accident, as cars and motorcycles passed by them all the time, any of which could have knocked them over.

"The necessity has forced Cubans to pick up anything that falls to the ground in order to reuse it for their daily meals," expressed independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta, who shared the video on Facebook.

These distressing spectacles are becoming increasingly frequent, demonstrating that scarcity continues to grow in the country.

This week, in Santiago de Cuba, several citizens were seen gathering pieces of yucca from the ground on the road in the Altamira neighborhood.

In September, a group of people was filmed picking up picadillo from the ground after an incident at a market in Havana.

In July, another shocking video showed several elderly people crouched on a street in Santiago de Cuba, gathering spilled powdered milk with their hands and placing it into plastic bags.

Oil, rice, beans, eggs, flour... any food that is accidentally spilled is quickly gathered by people, who rush to collect it to make use of it at home, without worrying about its hygiene or quality, only thinking about how it can help with their meals for the day.
