Susana Pérez encouraged Cubans in the United States on November 5 to seize the opportunity to exercise this right in a democratic country.
The Cuban actress recalled that while she lived in Cuba, she always wished to be able to choose her president, not just the delegates in her neighborhood.
"All of us Cubans who lived for many years in our country constantly complained about having to vote for people we sometimes didn't even know, for individuals who were already chosen, because the president was appointed without anyone actually electing him," the artist remarked.
In the live session she held on Instagram, Susana recalled an anecdote from an election in Cuba where the political propaganda encouraged everyone to vote. All four members of her family decided to vote "no" on their ballots to invalidate them; however, the chairperson of the polling station informed them after the voting that no ballots had been invalidated.
"Our vote didn’t matter at all. We’re not going to discuss whether the candidates were selected or not, that’s no longer relevant. What you did, whether you put yes or no, whether you shouted down with the dictatorship, Díaz-Canel out, whatever it was, it didn’t count," said the actress.
"In this country that has welcomed us, that has given us the opportunity to work, to live, to have the things we didn’t have in our own, but above all, the freedom—that is the most important thing. They are also giving us the opportunity to vote; I won’t campaign on who you should vote for or not, I leave that to you. But what you must not do is stop voting," Susana reflected.
The actress said that in her case, she voted by email more than two months ago.
