Professors, students, and staff at the University of Oriente (UO) in Santiago de Cuba expressed their sorrow on Tuesday at the passing of Professor Juan Sánchez Evangelista Rosado.
The Facebook profile of the University of Oriente announced that Professor Juan, as he was known by several generations of students and colleagues, was 75 years old at the time of his passing.
Evangelista excelled as a professor of Political Economy in the Department of History and Marxism-Leninism, and among his achievements, he graduated with a Master's degree in Agroecology from the Agrarian University of Havana.
His resume included being a literacy worker and internationalist, a member of the UO construction contingent, and Secretary of Organization of the grassroots association of ANEC.
According to the note, Evangelista was recognized for his dedication to work and university teaching, where he excelled in diligence, exemplary behavior, camaraderie, humility, and a strong sense of belonging to that institution of higher learning.
"The heartfelt condolences go out to your family, friends, colleagues, and students who remember you fondly," the statement indicated.
The guild of radio broadcasters and the cultural sector of Guantánamo expressed their sorrow on Tuesday over the loss of Marlene Salazar, a National Radio Award winner, who passed away in the early hours of that day.
Salazar was a prominent figure in the province, deserving of the Distinción Hermandad, the Raúl Gómez García Medal awarded by the National Union of Culture Workers, and the National Radio Award, noted the Provincial Culture Directorate of Guantánamo on its Facebook profile.
Recently, the last living Cuban resident on the island with experience in the Cuban Professional League, Luis Zayas Travieso, passed away in Havana at the age of 87, according to state media in the island and people close to the former player.
Zayas Travieso was a professional player for the teams of Havana and Cienfuegos before Fidel Castro came to power in 1959.
A few days ago, jazz and blues singer Bárbara Dane, mother and grandmother of Cuban musicians Pablo and Osamu Menéndez, passed away at the age of 97 in her home in Oakland, California, following a long battle with heart failure.
Pablo Menéndez, one of his four children, expressed his feelings on Facebook with a simple yet powerful message: “Peace, love… and music. We must fight.”
