The leader Miguel Díaz-Canel, following the earthquakes that struck the population in the eastern region this Sunday, urged residents of the affected areas, via his social media, to evacuate the buildings and stay in open spaces.

On the social network X, Díaz-Canel stated: “We ask our population in those areas to go outside and stay in open places.”

He also noted, “We have started assessing the damage to begin the recovery process. The first and foremost priority is to save lives.”

The leader also reported that "landslides, damage to homes, and disruptions to the electrical grid" have occurred as a result of the two earthquakes recorded on Sunday.

According to Díaz-Canel, "we communicated with the first secretaries of the Party in Santiago de Cuba and Granma, the provinces affected by the recent earthquakes, from the National Defense Council."

Dr. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba at the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), warned on his social media that the situation is quite complicated following the occurrence of two earthquakes this Sunday southeast of Pilón, in the province of Granma.

On Facebook, Arango pointed out that "the situation is quite complicated, many damages have been reported in Pilón, we need any reports of damages you may have."

Regarding this, the official journalist Lázaro Manuel Alonso stated on Facebook, citing CENAIS, that "authorities in the east are advising the population to remain alert for aftershocks from these earthquakes and to follow the safety measures."

"Preliminary damage is concentrated in the southern municipalities of Santiago and Granma, primarily affecting electrical infrastructure and homes, and there have been occurrences of landslides," Alonso noted.

Furthermore, he emphasized that there is no danger of a tsunami in Santiago de Cuba or in the eastern part of the country.

At 10:50 am this Sunday, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred, with its epicenter located 48 kilometers southeast of Pilón, Granma province.

Then, at 12:49 PM, an aftershock was recorded with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale, surpassing the initial earthquake.
