Social media reports indicate damage to the Cabo Cruz Lighthouse in the municipality of Niquero, Granma, following the noticeable earthquakes that shook eastern Cuba on the morning of this Sunday.
Images circulating in various Facebook groups show the small crack in the structure, as well as the fall of some materials.
The Cabo Cruz Lighthouse, also known as Faro Vargas, is located at the southern tip of Cabo Cruz. It stands 32 meters (105 feet) tall, with a focal height of 34 meters (112 feet), and emits a white flash every 5 seconds.
The construction of the lighthouse, which has 155 steps, began in 1862 under the governorship of Carlos de Vargas in the Eastern Department, and was completed in 1871 during the period of Spanish rule over Cuba.
Other damages reported from these earthquakes in Niquero, which have put the population of the southern eastern region of Cuba on alert, include the collapse of roofs and the cracking of walls at the Logía Macana.
Photographs of the location document how the zinc roof gave way under the seismic force.
The same situation occurred with an OFICODA in the village of Tierra Arriba, where the event left cracks in the walls.
At 10:50 am on this Sunday, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake occurred, with its epicenter located 48 kilometers southeast of Pilón, in Granma province.
Then, at 12:49 PM, an aftershock was recorded with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale, surpassing the first earthquake.
Dr. Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service of Cuba at the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), warned on his social media that the situation is quite complicated.
