Alarm in the eastern population of Cuba due to earthquakes

Citizens are fearful of potential aftershocks or new events.

The population of Santiago de Cuba and the rest of the eastern regions of the island experienced moments of panic this Sunday morning following a strong earthquake that shook the area—and the confirmation of a second one—causing alarm and prompting thousands of people to take to the streets.

The earthquake, felt in several municipalities of Santiago and potentially in the neighboring provinces of Guantánamo and Granma, prompted the residents of Santiago to quickly turn to social media to warn about the magnitude of the phenomenon.

The Facebook page "TV de Cuba" published images of citizens in the streets amidst the turmoil.

According to a report by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada, the magnitude of the first earthquake was estimated to be around 6 on the Richter scale, although this figure was unofficial.

The Head of Operations and Relief for the Red Cross in Santiago de Cuba, Aris Arias Batalla, also reported on the intensity of the tremor, describing it as "very strong" and noting that it occurred at 10:51 a.m.

Just a few minutes ago, an aftershock occurred, according to journalist Cuscó Tarradell on his Facebook page: “A second perceptible earthquake in the eastern region of Cuba has driven thousands of Santiago residents to the streets, many crying, moved by the panic that this type of event generates,” were some of his words.

These seismic movements have heightened anxiety among the population, particularly due to the seismic activity in the Oriente fault. Although no injuries have been reported so far, there is a strong likelihood of material damage, while the community remains vigilant in the face of possible aftershocks or new events.
