A Cuban mother gave birth to her baby amid the seismic emergency that had residents of the southern part of the eastern region of the country on alert this morning.
The birth, described as a moment of hope and life amidst adversity, concluded happily with the arrival of the baby into the world.
Despite the unfavorable conditions, the delivery was assisted by a team of specialists at the Mariano Pérez Balí Hospital, located in the municipality of Bartolomé Masó in the mountainous region of Granma.
Images shared by officials and state journalists showed the makeshift delivery room set up in what appears to be a hallway of the medical facility.
Ruber Meriño Medina, a political leader in the area, described the birth as “a delivery in wartime conditions, amid aftershocks,” a phrase that politicizes, as is often the case in official Cuban discourse, an intimate and human moment amidst the crisis.
This Sunday, thousands of people were forced to take shelter due to several earthquakes that occurred in eastern Cuba, with the most significant being one of magnitude 6 on the Richter scale and another measuring 6.7, both happening within less than an hour of each other.
So far, the National Seismological Service has recorded at least 300 aftershocks of the earthquake, which had its epicenter southeast of Pilón in Granma, of which at least 15 have been noticeable to the population.
In Granma and Santiago de Cuba, social media users have reported damage to homes and state buildings, primarily highlighting structural collapses and wall cracks.
