The renowned musical group Septeto Santiaguero was forced to cancel its scheduled performance on Saturday night at its official venue, El Salón del Son in Santiago de Cuba, due to ongoing power outages affecting the city.
In a statement released by the group, they expressed their gratitude for the understanding of their supporters and friends, who filled the venue's capacity with reservations to enjoy the show.
"We greatly appreciate the understanding of our followers and friends... It's wonderful to know that they are committed to our music and culture," they expressed in the post shared on their social media.
The concert, they said, marked the band's return to their hometown following the success of the 2024 International Tour, creating high expectations among the musicians.
However, the dire electrical conditions in the country did not allow the event to take place.
"Unfortunately, the electricity situation did not allow for this concert to take place, the first in our city following the return of the 2024 International Tour. Through this platform and other communication channels, we will keep you informed about a new schedule when circumstances permit," the statement added.
This incident reflects the difficult situation facing Santiago de Cuba, where prolonged power outages of up to eight hours a day have impacted cultural and social activities, causing frustration among the citizens.
The Septeto Santiaguero is one of the most representative groups of traditional Cuban music, particularly in the son genre. It was founded in 1995 by Fernando Dewar, the group's director and tres player.
Their repertoire includes both original compositions and tributes to great figures of Cuban music, such as Miguel Matamoros and Ñico Saquito, achieving a balance between tradition and innovation that has captivated audiences worldwide.
With tours in over 30 countries and international recognition, such as the Latin Grammy Awards in 2015 for the album No quiero Llanto. Tributo a Los Compadres, and in 2018 for A Mi Qué. Tributo a Los Clásicos Cubanos, Septeto Santiaguero has solidified its role as an ambassador of Cuban son.
In addition to their collaborations with renowned artists such as José Alberto "El Canario" and Oscar D'León, the group maintains a strong connection to their hometown, Santiago de Cuba, where their headquarters, El Salón del Son, is an iconic space dedicated to the promotion of Cuban music and culture.
