The prominent Cuban doctor Juan Bautista Mendilahaxon López passed away this Sunday in Cienfuegos at the age of 74, his family reported.
"A good man has passed away: our father. Juan Bautista Mendilahaxon López, you continue to live on in our memories. One month away from turning 75," wrote his son Erik Mendilahaxon Pina on Facebook.
Dr. Mendilahaxon, originally from the province of Villa Clara and a specialist in Internal Medicine, passed away on the morning of this Sunday, according to a statement released by the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima University General Hospital in Cienfuegos, where he worked since its early years following its establishment. The statement did not disclose the causes of his death.
"We physically bid farewell to a biography, a life of an eminent Internist, an excellent Professor and Teacher. A paradigm for all clinicians, dedicated to medical practice, science, and teaching. An exemplary father," praised the notice published by the health institution.
He also emphasized that the hospital was always the "second home" of Dr. Mendilahaxon, who came there from his hometown of Santa Clara, Villa Clara, "drawn by the love of his beloved wife," who "brought him among us to be a couple of distinguished professionals that we all aspired to be."
"May the shared pain of your loss reach your family, along with the assurance that he will always be with us," concluded the note.
Hundreds of people from Cienfuegos and those who knew the renowned doctor and professor have expressed their profound sorrow on social media over his passing. In particular, colleagues and students have also conveyed their gratitude for Mendilahaxon's teachings and legacy.
"Teacher of my heart. A kiss to Bertica in heaven, and rest assured that she did excellently! She carries the love and gratitude of her students and a little piece of my heart," were the heartfelt words of Dr. Marian Capote Pérez.
