A magnitude 4.2 earthquake shook several areas in the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba this Tuesday, causing concern and immediate reactions on social media.
Residents of the area expressed their concern following the perceptible earthquake. In places like Media Luna, Manzanillo, Pilón, and Niquero, Facebook groups were flooded with alarmed messages.
In Media Luna, a resident stated, "We felt it too. It was strong." In Pilón, another user shared, "It woke me up in the morning. God bless and protect our land."
Meanwhile, in Manzanillo, someone stated that "it hasn't stopped shaking" and that they have even felt mild aftershocks.
The uncertainty and fear regarding potential future events were reflected in comments such as that of a user who wrote, "What we are going through is too much. May God protect us."
The earthquake was recorded at 6:11 a.m. and had its epicenter 20.51 kilometers southwest of Pilón, in Granma. This was confirmed by Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the National Seismological Service at the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS).
This earthquake, recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers, is part of an intense seismic activity in the region, which has accumulated thousands of aftershocks following the powerful tremors of 6.0 and 6.7 on November 10.
Since then, CENAIS has recorded over 4,500 aftershocks, of which 106 have been noticeable. The seismic activity has kept the population of the eastern region on alert, where the Oriente fault, one of the most active in the country, is located.
The psychological impact of these phenomena is evident in the testimonials. A mother in Pilón remarked that the constant tremors do not allow them to "have a life," while others expressed their fear that the earthquakes will continue to affect the area.
Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and adhere to safety measures in light of these events. So far, no significant material damage or injuries related to this latest earthquake have been reported.
