They show damage caused by the new earthquake in Pilón, Granma

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake in Pilón, Granma, caused further damage to vulnerable buildings, particularly in the Coorcovado Television Room. The aftershocks have raised alarm on social media.

The 4.2 magnitude earthquake registered on Tuesday, shortly after six in the morning and felt in several municipalities of Granma and Santiago de Cuba, not only shook the population once again but also caused further damage to the already vulnerable buildings in Pilón, a locality severely affected by a 6.7 tremor on November 10.

Evaristo Pardo Fonseca, a local government worker, reported via Facebook on the damage caused by the recent earthquake to the Television Room in the community of Coorcovado, which is part of the Cañeras Brigades Popular Council in the municipality of Pilón, Granma.

"The number of earthquakes is increasing, along with the damage they cause. See how the television room in the Coorcovado community, within the Popular Council of Brigadas Cañeras in the municipality of Pilón, Granma, looks today, Tuesday, November 19, 2024, after the third earthquake," Pardo noted.

The shared images show several cracks in the facility's walls, highlighting one of considerable depth and size.

The 4.2 magnitude earthquake recorded this Tuesday, about 20.51 kilometers southwest of Pilón in Granma, at a depth of 10 kilometers, shook several towns in the provinces of Granma and Santiago de Cuba, causing concern and immediate reactions on social media.

Facebook groups were flooded with alarm messages regarding the perceptibility of the earthquake in areas such as Media Luna, Manzanillo, Pilón, and Niquero.

CENAIS specified on its website that since the earthquakes of 6.0 and 6.7 magnitude occurred on November 10, a total of 4,559 aftershocks have been recorded to date.

Of the total aftershocks, the entity specified that 106 have been "presumably perceptible"; and one, from this morning, has been reported as "strongly felt at 6:11 local time, with a magnitude of 4.2."
