The Government of Asturias granted nearly 150,000 euros to emigrants and their descendants in Cuba who are in vulnerable situations.
This is an initiative from the Ministry of the Presidency, Demographic Challenge, Equality, and Tourism aimed at helping to meet the basic needs of individuals born in Asturias and their children in the first degree of consanguinity.
This year, 926 applications were received, of which 833 were approved. The majority came from Cubans (606), followed by Argentinians (158) and Venezuelans (111).
The program includes two lines of support: one aimed at individuals over 65 years old and another for those aged 18 to 64 who are victims of gender-based violence, have permanent disabilities, or suffer from a serious illness that prevents them from working.
The total amount approved this year was 440,000 euros (30,000 euros more than in 2023), which was distributed in assistance provided to 833 emigrants and their descendants in Latin America as follows:
Argentina: 155,748 euros
Cuba: 149,338 euros
Venezuela: 95,379 euros
Uruguay: 15,487 euros
Mexico: 8,209 euros
Chile: 7,522 euros
Brazil: 6,209 euros
Other countries in Latin America: 2,104 euros
According to information published on the international portal, the amount of aid varies depending on the circumstances of each beneficiary and their country of residence, taking into account the local purchasing power.
"The maximum amount is 2,000 euros, except in the case of Cuba, where the limit is set at 600 euros," he clarified.
In 2024, there were 65 more requests received than in 2023, and 60 more applications were approved. The submission of applications closed on June 7th.
In last year's call, 861 people signed up. As in this edition, the majority were from Cuba (497). Ultimately, 773 grants were awarded.
Olaya Gómez Romano, director general of Emigration and Return Policies, expressed that the assistance reflects the Government of Asturias' commitment to Asturians living abroad and their descendants, "ensuring their well-being, regardless of where they reside."
To apply for these aids, the following requirements must be met:
1.- To be a native of Asturias or to have had their last residence in an Asturian municipality; or to be a descendant of an Asturian (up to the first degree of consanguinity).
2.- Remain in emigration and hold Spanish nationality for at least 10 consecutive years, which must be immediately prior to the date of publication of the announcement.
3.- Be registered in the Register of Spaniards Resident Abroad (PERE) of Asturias; lack assets and income that would allow for a minimum standard of living.
4.- Not having donated assets in the 5 years prior to the application for financial assistance. (In the case of having made donations, their market value will be counted as income for the purpose of meeting the income threshold established in the relevant call for applications).
SPANISH CITIZENS MOVING TO ASTURIAS WILL RECEIVE SUPPORT OF UP TO 6,000 EUROS.
In April, the Government of Asturias announced that emigrants with Spanish citizenship who wish to settle in the autonomous community will receive assistance of up to 6,000 euros to help cover their return expenses.
The authorities have modified the criteria for the assistance program for Asturians residing abroad, easing the requirements to access these aids and increasing the amount provided.
Gimena Llamedo, Vice President of the Principality of Asturias, revealed that the program's budget has increased to 500,000 euros, allowing for a greater number of applications to be addressed.
The amount of each aid will range between 2,400 and 6,000 euros, representing a 30% increase compared to the current amount.
