A passenger attempted to divert Volaris flight 3041 from Bajío to Tijuana this Sunday to the United States. The incident, which caused alarm among travelers, had a controlled outcome thanks to the cooperation of both passengers and crew.
The situation forced an emergency landing at Guadalajara International Airport.
The protagonist of the incident—of Mexican origin and identified as Mario "N," 31 years old—burst into the aircraft's cockpit threatening the crew.
During the struggle, some passengers intervened to subdue the assailant, preventing him from achieving his goal. One of them, identified as Jesús, played a crucial role in calming Mario “N” and convincing him to surrender.
Volaris emphasized in a statement that the crew acted in accordance with established safety protocols.
The airline reported that the man claimed to have received kidnapping threats against a close relative if he continued on to Tijuana.
Mario “N” was traveling with his wife and their two minor children, who left the aircraft with him after his arrest.
The arrest
Upon landing in Guadalajara, National Guard personnel boarded the aircraft and arrested Mario "N".
The man was transferred to a military hospital due to minor injuries sustained during the altercation and subsequently remained in the custody of the Attorney General's Office.
He is now facing charges that could result in sentences of up to 70 years in prison.
The airline deeply regrets the inconveniences caused to its passengers and reaffirms its commitment to safety.
"The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority," stated Volaris, expressing gratitude for the bravery of the passengers who helped manage the situation.
After the incident, the flight was able to resume its route to Tijuana, where it landed without further issues.
