A Soviet-made Moskvitch car collided this morning with the wall of the first entry bridge to Buenaventura, located in the Calixto García municipality of Holguín province.
"At the entrance of Buenaventura, Calixto García municipality, Holguín province. A Moscovich (Moskvitch). I don’t have any more details," reported a user from the Facebook group 'Accidents Buses & Trucks', sharing photographs of the incident.
The images showed the condition of the vehicle after the impact, with the body completely crushed and the front compressed "like an accordion," according to eyewitness accounts.
The officialist station Radio Juvenil identified the driver of the Moskvith as Alexis Barreras, a resident of the Villa Magalis neighborhood, also known as La Mananina. According to the station's website, Barreras was injured and was initially taken to the municipal hospital, and later transferred to provincial health institutions for more specialized care.
According to preliminary reports, the accident occurred when Barreras attempted to overtake an animal-drawn vehicle. Upon noticing another car approaching from the opposite direction, he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the bridge wall.
Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact causes of the incident. The damaged vehicle has been removed and transported to the local police station.
This incident adds to a series of similar accidents in the area, such as the one that occurred at the end of April, when a modern car—reportedly a Volkswagen—was left hanging from a bridge known as La Rioja, which a user in the comments section identified as being located in the town of Buenaventura, in the municipality of Calixto García.
Despite the dramatic nature of the images, the occupants of the vehicle emerged unscathed. "Everyone survived this accident in Holguín," noted the user who reported the incident in the Facebook group 'Accidentes Automovilísticos en Cuba'.
In mid-November, a tractor carrying eleven people, including three minors, fell from a bridge near the Ernesto Che Guevara mining company in Moa, Holguín.
Although there were no fatalities, all the passengers were injured, and four of them, including a four-year-old girl, were reported in serious condition.
In mid-February, a tragic accident occurred on the Masó - Las Mercedes road in the Bartolomé Masó municipality, specifically on the Río Yara bridge in Granma, when the driver of a truck lost control and the vehicle plunged from the bridge, resulting in seven people being injured.
