The magnate and founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, has vehemently denied rumors suggesting an extravagant wedding with his fiancée, journalist Lauren Sánchez, which was supposedly set to take place in Aspen, Colorado, before the end of the year, with an estimated cost of 600 million dollars.
The CEO of Pershing Square, Bill Ackman, denied the information on X, calling it implausible.
"This is unbelievable. Unless you're buying a house for each of your guests, you can't spend that much money," he scoffed.
Hours later, Bezos himself returned to that post to reaffirm that the rumors were false.
"All of this is completely false; none of this is happening," wrote Bezos, reacting to reports that had been widely circulated on social media and in some international news outlets.
The billionaire not only denied the rumor but also reflected on the speed at which lies spread in the digital age.
"The old saying 'don't believe everything you read' is truer today than ever. Now, lies can spread around the entire world before the truth can even put on its pants. So be careful and don't be gullible," he added.
"It will be interesting to see if the media outlets that 'covered' and spread this story make a correction," the businessman added, highlighting the level of media scrutiny that public figures like him face.
The speculation originated from an article in the Daily Mail, which cited a "well-informed source" and outlined alleged plans for a luxurious ceremony at actor Kevin Costner's 160-acre ranch, located in the exclusive area of Aspen.
That said, I hope you celebrate an epic wedding. It's nice to know that somewhere in the world, epic events are taking place, even if one isn't present. A world where amazing things happen somewhere is better than a world where nothing happens at all," wrote none other than Elon Musk in the comments, hinting that, whenever it happens, he would not be among the guests.
The relationship between Bezos and Sánchez
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez made their relationship public in 2019, shortly after the tycoon divorced his first wife, MacKenzie Scott.
Since then, the couple has maintained a relationship that combines privacy with appearances at high-profile events.
Lauren Sánchez, 54, is a journalist and businesswoman with a prominent career in the media. She has served as a presenter on networks such as FOX and CNBC, and is also the founder of the production company Black Ops Aviation, which specializes in aerial filming.
Sánchez is also a mother of three children: Nikko, from her relationship with former NFL player Tony González, and Ella and Evan, from her marriage to Patrick Whitesell.
In May 2023, Bezos and Sánchez announced their engagement during a trip to Positano, Italy, surrounded by close friends like Bill Gates and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Although they have not publicly revealed the details of their wedding, Sánchez has commented in interviews about his excitement for the preparations.
Social and labor criticisms of Bezos
The rumors about the allegedly million-dollar wedding quickly sparked negative reactions on social media, especially in the context of the labor protests facing Amazon.
Some users criticized the contrast between the alleged opulence of the supposed wedding and the working conditions of the company's employees.
"To put it into perspective, Bezos could give a $2 million raise to each of his 275,000 Amazon delivery drivers, and it would still be $50 million cheaper than his wedding," commented a user on X.
Currently, Amazon workers in New York and other states are on strike, demanding better wages and working conditions.
Although rumors of the wedding have been denied, the public scrutiny of Bezos and his fortune, estimated at 250 billion dollars, remains ongoing.
