The tragedy struck the community of El Cristo in Santiago de Cuba with the death of Lisnet Guzmán de la Cruz, a 15-year-old girl who passed away following a suicide attempt driven by cyberbullying and defamation on social media.

Journalist Yosmany Mayeta reported that on Thursday, December 19, an anonymous post on the Facebook page "Ventorrillo El Cristo" targeted Guzmán with malicious comments about his personal life.

Unable to overcome the humiliation and emotional pressure, the young woman ingested 36 pills of a medication (name withheld for privacy), passing away two days later, on Saturday afternoon, at the North Children's Hospital in Santiago de Cuba.

Mayeta emphasized that, according to people close to her family, Guzmán had already faced a suicide attempt earlier this year due to a similar situation.

Even though she received psychological support and started treatment for depression, the constant harassment and defamatory posts pushed her back into a state of despair from which she could not recover.

The page "Ventorrillo El Cristo," which is supposedly aimed at sales and business, has been pointed out on several occasions for spreading anonymous posts that target local residents, particularly adolescents, it noted.

These publications have caused serious psychological and social harm, like in the case of Guzmán, whose outcome has resulted in anger and pain within his community.

Family members, friends, and close associates have called on local authorities, including the Ministry of the Interior and the Provincial Health Directorate, to investigate the administrators and creators of this page and to take concrete measures to prevent future tragedies caused by cyberbullying.

The case of Guzmán is a painful reminder of the dangers of cyberbullying and the need to curb the spread of malicious posts on social media.
