The Cuban, whose identity was not disclosed, operated in unauthorized areas near the border, where he welcomed Nicaraguan migrants and transported them into the interior of the country in exchange for money.

At the time of his arrest, the man was transporting six foreign migrants in a vehicle.

The Deputy Director of the Professional Migration Police, Elías Soto, emphasized that the detention is part of an ongoing effort to strengthen border control, especially during times of high migratory movement.

"The Professional Immigration Police continues to strengthen border controls for migration. During this time, the departure of foreigners is more pronounced, which is why we are also enhancing our policing efforts at the border. To date, we have detected two cases of illegal human trafficking: one in the Liberia sector of Guanacaste, and the other in the Los Chiles sector," Soto stated.

The detainee was brought before the Public Ministry in the courts of Liberia, where their legal status will be determined.

This case is part of a series of recent actions against human trafficking in Costa Rica.

In September 2024, seven men were convicted of human trafficking involving Cuban migrants crossing the border from Panama.

The investigations into this case began in 2019 and resulted in sentences of up to nine years in prison for those involved.

Costa Rica has become an important destination for migrants from Nicaragua, especially in the context of the political, social, and economic crises affecting their neighboring country.

Historically, Nicaraguans have sought refuge in Costa Rica due to its relative economic and political stability, as well as the job opportunities it provides, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, construction, and domestic services.

In recent years, migration flows have increased significantly, driven by political repression and a lack of freedoms in Nicaragua.

Costa Rica, recognized for its humanitarian approach, has implemented measures to regularize migrants, although it faces challenges related to pressure on public services, social integration, and the rise of irregular migration flows.

The border region, particularly in Peñas Blancas, is a key point in this phenomenon, both for the entry of migrants and for the detection of illegal activities related to human trafficking.
