Starting May 7, 2025, passengers traveling within the United States will be required to present identification that meets Real ID standards in order to board domestic flights.
This measure, established by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), will also be required to access federal facilities and nuclear power plants, Telemundo Chicago reported.
The Real ID Act, enacted in 2005, aims to enhance the security of driver's licenses and other identification documents issued by the government, making them more difficult to counterfeit.
Identifications that comply with Real ID are marked by a star in the upper right corner and have the same cost as a standard license.
To obtain a Real ID, residents over 18 years of age must visit their state's Secretary's office in person and present documents that verify their identity, Social Security number, and residency, among others.
It is important to note that the process may vary depending on the state, so it is advisable to consult with local authorities to understand the specific requirements.
Although the deadline has been postponed several times, authorities are urging citizens not to wait until the last minute to obtain their Real ID, as an increase in demand is expected as the deadline approaches, which could lead to long lines and delays at processing offices.
"Travelers without identification that complies with the Real ID Act or any other acceptable form of ID after the May 7, 2025 deadline may encounter delays at security checkpoints in airports," said the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), highlighting the possibility of warnings or potentially "progressive consequences" for those lacking compliant identification.
"The federal agency would deny the individual's access at that time and in all future instances, unless the individual obtains a Real ID or presents an acceptable alternative form of identification," they add.
However, for those who prefer to use their driver's license as their primary form of identification, obtaining a Real ID will be essential.
