Cuban-American Enrique Tarrio, who is serving a 22-year prison sentence for the assault on the U.S. Capitol in 2021, is seeking a pardon from elected President Donald Trump when he takes office.

According to her mother, Local 10 reported that her lawyer sent a letter officially requesting a pardon on Monday, January 6, marking four years since the horrible events at the Capitol.

That day, Zuny Duarte Tarrio spoke with her son in prison and found him happy. "He said, 'Today is the certification,'" she recounted.

Zuny stated that "this should have happened years ago." She has previously claimed that he was subjected to an "unjust process" and that the government used him as a "political pawn," since he was not in Washington that day.

The former leader of the extremist group Proud Boys, who resides in Miami, has been convicted by a federal court for orchestrating a plot to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power following the 2020 presidential elections, which culminated in the attack on the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump.

He received the harshest penalty imposed on any of the participants in the events.

"As a mother, it's devastating, that's the word I would use," said Zuny Duarte.

Among the defendants, there are 15 from Miami-Dade and Broward. Their families hope that Trump will overturn the process and that everyone will be released.

However, the Republican politician has clarified that pardons will not be granted generally, but rather on an individual basis after reviewing each case.
