Proud Boys is a far-right nationalist organization, founded in the United States in 2016 under the leadership of former commentator Gavin McInnes. Since late 2018, it has been led by Cuban-American businessman Enrique Tarrio. It is estimated that about 45,000 people are affiliated with the organization in the United States and Canada.
The organization staged protests and confronted the demonstrators of the Black Lives Matter movement in the streets, becoming a stronghold in favor of Donald Trump's re-election and supporting his claims of electoral fraud in 2020.
Members of the organization were involved in the assault on the Capitol in Washington on January 6, 2021, and several have been charged for that violent action. In February 2021, the government of Canada designated them as a terrorist group.
