A group of Spanish businessmen wants to build a golf course 14 kilometers from Havana, in the Mariel development zone. It will be, according to publication preferente.com, the most important resort closest to the Cuban capital. The project, which was signed this Wednesday, is backed by money from Mallorcan investors and will go forward through a mixed company formed by the state-owned company Cuba Golf S. A. and the Spanish firm El Salado Resort S. L. Among the shareholders of the latter is María José Hidalgo, director of Air Europa. It is she who has already defined it as the "most important and closest golf course to Havana."
This will be the first real estate project in Cuba whose buyers will have ownership of their houses in perpetuity (on the Island the owners are in usufruct), which makes the investment more attractive. In the resort, 2,070 apartments will be built, a shopping center, a clubhouse with a spa, an 18-hole golf course, a golf hotel with 250 rooms, another beach hotel with 500 rooms, 273 villas, 596 chalets and public services.
The Mallorcan company El Salado Resort, chaired by Juan Maura, has two and a half years to finalize the construction and feasibility plan of the project, which will occupy 208.3 hectares on the seafront for three kilometers. By doing calculations they estimate that It will be operational in five years. It will cost 1 billion euros (more than 1.1 million dollars).
The Cuban Government wants to convert the Mariel area into a reference for technological and tourist development in Cuba. And since it wants to achieve this in the short term, it has chosen to apply fiscal and logistical incentives to investors.
Given the magnitude of the project, focused as a second home for European and North American buyers, Maura explained that it will be built in several phases. The first thing will be the golf course, the 250-room golf hotel, 250 rooms and about thirty villas.
