Among the Cubans who stand out in the current minor league season is Luis Miguel Romero from Guantanamo. The right-hander accustomed to coming from the bullpen has had excellent starts to the point of becoming the closer for the Stockton Ports, the advanced Class-A branch of the Oakland Athletics.
This afternoon Romero saved his 8th game of the season when in two innings the rivals could not hit him and he struck out three. Dayron Blanco from Camaguey went 1-for-3 in the match and increased his average to .283.
Going back to Romero's phenomenal start, opponents are only hitting .157 and he is second in saves in the California League. His best statistic is that in 20.2 innings he has not allowed a walk, presenting notable control and his WHIP is 0.53 due to a hit ball.
The Cuban is in an organization with breadth and space to rise through the minor league levels and even reach the Major Leagues. His command will allow him to continue climbing, in addition to a straight line that gains more and more speed. Romero could be in the Major Leagues in the near future.
