The governments of the United States and Mexico have issued a joint resolution with the measures taken to stop irregular migration, the result of a meeting in which they addressed the emergency and humanitarian security situation caused by the increase in the number of migrants moving from Central America to the United States.
Mexico pledged to take “unprecedented measures” to stop irregular migration, including the deployment of its National Guard throughout the territory, “giving priority to its southern border.”
It will also take “decisive measures to dismantle human trafficking and smuggling organizations, as well as their illicit financial and transportation networks.”
In addition, both nations will strengthen bilateral cooperation, including information exchange and actions to secure the common border.
President Donald Trump reported on his Twitter profile about the agreement, which includes the suspension of new tariffs against Mexico scheduled for Monday.
“Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take strong measures to stem the tide of migration through Mexico, and to our southern border. This is being done to greatly reduce, or eliminate, illegal immigration from Mexico and into the United States. Details of the Agreement will be released shortly by the State Department. “Thank you!” he wrote.
The resolution establishes that the United States will expand the implementation of the Migrant Protection Protocols. This implies that those who cross the border to seek asylum will be returned to Mexico, where they will wait for the adjudication of their applications.
Meanwhile, the United States committed to expedite the adjudication of said requests and conclude removal proceedings as quickly as possible.
In response, Mexico will authorize the entry of people for humanitarian reasons, while they wait for the adjudication of their requests, and will offer employment, health and education in accordance with its principles.
