The young Cuban baseball playerAnthony Bruno Scull signed a contract this Monday with the Los Angeles Angels franchise, for an amount of 235 thousand dollars, as reported on social networks by specialized journalist Francys Romero.
The 17-year-old prospect, son of first baseman Antonio Scull, escaped Cuba in March and settled in the Dominican Republic as a free agent.
He also held some exhibitions for observers of the different Major League teams of North American professional baseball.
Anthony is the son of the former player of the capital teams in the National Series and three-time Olympic medalist with the Cuban team (gold in Atlanta 1996 and Athens 2004, silver in Sydney 2000), Antonio Scull, considered one of the best left-handed hitters in the history of capital baseball. He played a total of 20 seasons, of which eight in the Industriales uniform.
Before leaving Cuba, Scull Jr. played in the youth ranks in Havana, his native province. He is an average hitter, with good touch, agile on the pads and a very good defender.
According to journalist Francys Romero, he is seen as a great contact bat, and has run 6.4 in the 60 yards.
Another Cuban, pitcher Jorge Marcheco (19 years old) also signed this week with the Angels. The bonus deal was set at $350,000, according to Romero.
A native of Granma and 19 years old, Marcheco joined the Cuban U-15 team in 2017 during the Pan American Championship in Cartagena, Colombia, where he achieved a pair of victories.
Some time later, the young prospect went to the Dominican Republic. There he aroused the interest of several MLB teams.
Marcheco has a 93 mph fastball, curve, changeup and slider.
The Angels have signed five Cuban players in recent months: catcher Edgar Quero, infielder Edgar Brian Alfonso, Jorge Marchecho and Anthony Scull. Receiver Jonathan Linares must make his signature official after January 15, Romero recalled.
"The Angels are searching for and capturing Cuban talent," the journalist said on Twitter.
