MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó will hold a call this Wednesday with the president of the United States, Joe Biden, within the framework of the Summit of the Americas taking place this week in Los Angeles, a senior US official said.
The assistant secretary of state for the Western Hemisphere, Brian Nichols, spoke about the call in an interview with a Mexican media broadcast on Tuesday night and in which he confirmed that Guaidó will not attend the Summit.
"The president of the United States will have a call tomorrow with interim president Juan Gauidó to discuss our very important relationship," Nichols told Millennium TV
"We continue to recognize the interim government, the important efforts to return Venezuela to democracy", he added.
The White House excluded Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua from the meeting, causing the president of Mexico to make good on his threat not to attend the event due to the decision not to invite all countries in the Western Hemisphere.
Having ruled out the Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro, Washington was considering a role for Guaidó possibly virtually in a side event, a US official recently said.
