Fishermen from Isla de la Juventud anticipate capturing 750 tons of lobster for export before the winter season for the crustacean ends in December 2022.
In statements to official television, the director of the UEB (Basic Business Unit) Islamar, Dania Hernández, commented that in the first three months of the current campaign – whose first stage ends on September 30 and is called "capture of the bottom "– the export plan has been exceeded by 108 percent.
"We are 108% complete in the campaign and now we are also preparing conditions because the campaign begins in October.lobster run, of the winter season," he explained.
It is expected that in October the catch will increase during the "lobster run" stage, which implies a change in fishing methods and the use of the so-called "lobster run cage," he said.
The current season has been "so efficient" that one of the vessels, the Guacanayabo, has already fulfilled its annual plan with the capture of 60 tons until August 13, and another 10 tons since that date.
Other fishing sites in Cuba have also increased the capture of the crustacean, as is the case of Pinar del Río, where the La Coloma Industrial Fishing Company (EPICOL) prepared a nursery to export live lobsters, a product in high demand abroad. with which the Cuban Government intends to increase its income in that sector.
Also in Granma, companies in the fishing industry hope this year to be able to exceed their lobster export plan. Despite the effects caused by electricity outages, the Cuban government gives priority to this product, due to its demand abroad, to try to increase its income.
The Cuban lobster is considered the star fishing product destined for the international market, and the one that generates the most foreign currency for the country in that sector.
However, Cubans can never consume this product legally, since lobster is not sold in most of the island's markets and when it is found it is atastronomical prices.
Last August, the sale of lobster tails from Cuba in French supermarkets provoked the reaction of a Cuban woman who left a handwritten message on the refrigerator where the product was displayed: “Today I passed by my supermarket (in France) and when I I found these lobster tails from Cuba, I couldn't resist and left a little message saying: 'Whoever buys that product enriches the dictatorship in Cuba.'"
