The regime ofNicaragua took the news channel CNN en Español off the air, reported the news network, which still does not know the reasons for this departure.

"At CNN en Español we believe in the vital role that press freedom plays in a healthy democracy. Today the Government of Nicaragua pulled our television signal, denying Nicaraguans news and information from our network, in which they have trusted for more than 25 years,” said this Wednesday astatement from CNN en Español, also made known on Twitter by journalist and presenter Fernando del Rincón.

The note also assured that “CNN en Español will continue to fulfill its responsibility to the Nicaraguan public, offering our news links on CNNEspanol.com, so that they can have access to information that is not available in any other way. "CNN stands behind our network's reporting and reaffirms its commitment to truth and transparency."

They also said that "so far, the Government of Nicaragua has not commented on why it has taken the CNN en Español signal off the air in the country."

Likewise, they pointed out that “Nicaraguan viewers will also be able to see our signal on the CNN en Español YouTube channel.”

This measure transcends after the regime ofDaniel Ortega has just escalated his confrontation with the Catholic Church in that Central American country, after the arrest of several priests and the bishop of Matagalpa, MonsignorRolando Alvarez Lagos, critical of the current leftist government.

Likewise, in May of this year, dictator Ortega orderedthe dissolution of the Nicaraguan Academy of Language, an organization with more than 94 years serving culture, as part of the crusade it wages against Nicaraguan civil society.

The Academy will be outlawed in the National Assembly, along with a group of 83 non-governmental organizations, for, among other things, not registering in the registry of “foreign agents.”

Later, in June,Ortega presented a bill with which he intends to illegalize 101 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in that country, including the Missionaries of Charity Association, of the Order of Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

The proposal seeks to annul organizations that are dedicated to agricultural, environmental, support for youth and children, community development, religion, health, charity, and human rights activities.

In June, it was also revealed thatUS to impose visa restrictions on 93 more people believed to have undermined democracy in Nicaragua, within the framework of the election that allowed the re-election of President Daniel Ortega in 2021.

Among the targets of the measures are judges, prosecutors, members of the National Assembly and officials of the Ministry of the Interior, Blinken detailed.

Washington and Managua have been at odds for years, but relations suffered an especially hard blow when Ortega, a former Marxist guerrilla, won a fourth consecutive term in November after jailing his rivals and cracking down on critical media.
