The biggest prize ofPowerball remains ownerless in the United States. After not finding a winner in the draw held this Saturday night, theaccumulated rose from 875 to 900 million dollars facing this July 17.
The figure remains the third largest in the history of that popular game of chance.
No ticket matched the winning combination: 2, 9, 43, 55 and 57, on the white balls; and 18 in the red Powerball.
If there is a lucky person this Monday, they will be able to collect the total in annual payments or choosea single cash payment, which in this case would be 465.1 million, as detailed in theweb of the draw.
The tiny chances of winning the prize, which is one in 292.2 million, are designed to accumulate large sums that attract more players.
Powerball hasn't had a jackpot winner since April 19, when a ticket sold for 252.6 million in Ohio was the lucky one. Since then, almost 40 consecutive draws have been held without a winner of the juiciest prize in the popular game of chance.
Powerball costs two dollars a ticket and is played in 45 states, as well as Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
There are only eight states that charge no state tax on lottery winnings, meaning they offer the highest payout. They are Florida, California, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
To participate in the draw - held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays - it is necessary to choose five numbers between 1 and 59, in addition to a sixth number between 1 and 35, which is called Powerball.
You can pay an extra amount, called "Powerplay" so that, if you win, your winnings are multiplied by two, three, five or ten.
Although the chance of winning is slim, history shows that it is not impossible.
Edwin Castro, a 30-year-old former mechanic and aspiring architect, became the winner of thelargest prize ever paid in any lottery in the world.
Castro won $2.04 billion with a ticket he purchased at a Joe's Service Center gas station in Altadena, a town in Los Angeles, California with just over 42,000 inhabitants. The lucky person was left with 997.6 million after choosing the single prize payment.
