At just 18 years old, she won the title of queen of Miss Teen Universe Arizona after arriving on American soil in 2021 and competing for the first time in a beauty contest.
“I can't believe my nine-year-old self's dream is coming true. A year ago I was in Cuba asking God for the opportunity to make my dreams come true and unfortunately I had to leave a whole life behind to achieve them,” he wrote on his Instagram after winning the contest last May.
“I have experienced poverty and oppression just as 11 million Cubans are doing right now. “I will not give up until my voice is heard globally,” she said along with the photos in which she was proudly holding the Cuban flag.
In an interview for Telemundo 51, the young woman said that she worked and practiced a lot to achieve this achievement, even modeling at home in front of her mother to prepare for this moment.
“Always, since I lived in Cuba, I told my mother: 'Mommy, when I go I want to be a model, I want to be in something modeling, a contest,'” Amys said, but she knew that in Cuba it was difficult to have these opportunities. .
Most of his adolescence he spent on the island with his grandmother waiting for the moment to be able to join his parents in the United States, something he achieved at the age of 16.
The new beginning in this country was difficult especially because of the language: “The first day of school I came home crying because I had not understood anything the teachers had said. I felt a little left out a lot of times because I didn't know how to communicate.”
These barriers have been left behind, since Amys Nápoles Ochoa is today a beauty queen but above all a winner who serves as an inspiration to many young Cubans.
