Cuban authorities announced the suspension of the ferry service between Isla de la Juventud and Batabanó until further notice.

A note from the Viajero Company informed passengers of the suspension of maritime service on the Perseverancia ferry, without explaining the reason, which could be the fuel shortage in the country.

According to information published in the weeklyVictoriaIn a prioritized manner, reservations will be attended to with continuity of travel abroad and the provinces, medical appointments and other exceptional cases that will be reviewed, according to the availability of failures in the catamaran service.

"No entries will be made on our waiting lists," he said.

The entity apologized and requested the collaboration of passengers to take into account the existing situation and, if possible, travel only for issues that cannot be postponed.

HePerseverancia began its regular operations on the Nueva Gerona-Batabanó route on August 5, after one year of purchase, with prices ranging from 200 pesos to 780 pesos, for those who wish to transport a passenger vehicle with up to 12 seats (minibus).

During that first August I would make two trips a week, and starting in September I would increase one frequency a week.

In recent months there have been complaints about the operation.

At the beginning of the month, a user who took the Gerona-Batabanó route reported that the trip checks in at 10:00 pm in Gerona and leaves two hours later.

"It arrives at 6 in the morning and you can't get off until 8. But the real ordeal is backwards," he said on his Twitter.

In July 2022, the Cuban government reported thepurchase of a ferry for the transportation of passengers and cargo on the sea route that links Nueva Gerona, on the Isle of Youth, and Batabanó, in Mayabeque.

On each trip, 430 passengers would be transported, double the number of catamarans that operated the route and with which they would continue to alternate the service, according to information released by the official press.

The ship, built in 2018 and with advanced technology and high-precision navigation aid equipment, is operated by VIAMAR, a Cuban Pilot entity.

After its purchase in an Asian country that was not disclosed and at a cost that the government also did not report, specialized brigades from the CDC Shipyards in Havana undertook the remodeling of the ship, to expand premises and enable others in order to double the number. of passengers.
