Shooter Leuris Pupo gives Cuba second gold at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games

The Cuban reached 30 points in total to surpass the representatives of Venezuela and the United States, companions on the podium in that order.

The Cuban shooter Leuris Pupo gave Cuba its second gold medal of the Pan American Games Santiago de Chile 2023, in the rapid fire mode with an air pistol.

With only four points difference, Pupo emerged victorious against a podium also made up of the Venezuelan silver Douglas Gómez (26 points) and the American tan Henry Leverett (23 points).

Pupo from Holguín, winner of two golds also in Santo Domingo 2003 and Rio de Janeiro 2007, is one of the Cuban athletes classified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

In November 2022, it became the Cuba's first qualifier for the five rings event in the French capital, after winning the gold medal in the 25-meter rapid fire pistol during the Lima 2022 Pan American Shooting Sports Championship, in Peru.

If he is present at Paris 2024, Pupo would be attending his seventh consecutive Olympic Games since Sydney 2000, with the most outstanding performances in London 2012, thanks to the gold achieved in the 25 m rapid pistol category, and the Tokyo 2020 silver.

In other results of the day, the cyclist Arlenis Sierra He won the silver medal in the time trial of the road cycling competition.

The one also attached to the prestigious Spanish professional club Movistar pedaled with a time of 26 seconds and 07 hundredths (26:07.11), only behind the American Kristen Faulkner who registered 25:45.38, while the bronze went to the Chilean Aranza Villalón, with time of 26:07.28, the agency reported Latin Press.

Meanwhile, one of the hopes of the Cuban delegation, the boxer Lazaro Alvarez, lost in his first outing 5-0 against Canadian Wyatt Sanford.

Previously, the weightlifter Arley Calderon had given the first gold medal of the Cuban delegation at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, with a total of 279 points in the less than 61 kg category.

With these results, Cuba is ranked sixth by country, with two gold and one silver in the overall medal table. The Cuban delegation is surpassed by the United States (25), Mexico (15), Canada (12), Brazil (14) and Colombia (10), in that order.
