Messi wins his eighth Ballon d'Or

Messi beat Norwegian Erling Halaand and French runner-up Kylian Mbappé in the voting.


The Argentine star Lionel Messi He won the 2023 Ballon d'Or this Monday, the eighth of his career during the gala that took place at the Chatelet Theater in Paris.

Messi crowns, in this way, what is possibly the most impressive record in the history of football, at the magazine's annual gala France Football.

The man from Rosario won the votes over the Norwegian Erling Halaand and the French runner-up Kylian Mbappé. The award was presented to him by the English legend and director of Inter Miami, his current club, David Beckham.

Messi thanked the journalists who chose him, his teammates and congratulated his two contenders.

“I am lucky to have been in this gala for many years, and the players are renewing themselves,” he commented in what seemed an allusion to the end of his career.

“I want to mention Diego, today is his birthday, this is also for you, I share it with you and with all of Argentina,” he said excitedly.

The women's Ballon d'Or, for its part, was won by the Spanish Aitana Bonmatí, the FC Barcelona forward was crowned with the Catalan club, which was awarded as the women's club of the year, in La Liga and the Champions, and was one of the stars of the world crown of their country's team.

Bonmatí dedicated the award to her teammates, her family and above all to Barcelona for betting on women's football "when no one believed in them."

The brilliant Manchester City striker Halaand, second in the general vote, went to the 2023 Müller Trophy, which rewards the best scorer of the season. City won the European club of the year award.

Likewise, Real Madrid's English striker Jude Bellingham won the Kopa trophy for best young player last season.

The also forward of the Real Madrid Vinicius Jr. won the Socrates Trophy, which is awarded to football personalities who positively impact society. The Brazilian receives it for the work of his foundation in precarious areas of the South American giant and his fight against racism.

The Argentine goalkeeper, one of the heroes of Argentina's world conquest, was awarded the Lev Yashin trophy, which rewards the best goalkeeper of the season. El Dibu surpassed the Belgian Thibaut Cortouis, last year's winner and one of the favorites, in the votes.

During his speech, the Aston Villa goalkeeper was booed by the French public.
