A court in the city of Santa Clara sentencedprison sentences to two citizens for tax evasion for an amount that together exceededsix million Cuban pesos, according to official sources.
The address of the National Office of Tax Administration (ONAT) in Santa Clarapublished the criminal sentences of two citizens accused of the crime oftax evasion.

One of them, accused oftax evasion of 4,978,429.71 Cuban pesos, was sentenced tothree years of deprivation of liberty with limitation of freedom in the same period, noted the ONAT.
To the other person, found guilty of thetax evasion of 1,110,534.51 Cuban pesos, he was sentenced tofour years of deprivation of liberty and “repair the material damage caused by paying 1,000,270.64 pesos.”
According to the official statement from the ONAT, from January to October they settled in the Prosecutor's Office of the capital of Villa Clara.six complaints against citizens for tax evasion, for a total amount of11,011,959.08 Cuban pesos.
The note does not specify whether the rest of those accused have already been prosecuted and received criminal sanctions for their actions.
In 2022,The government restricted travel abroad and entry into the country to taxpayers with “significant” debts to the treasury, as long as they do not settle their debts with the State. To this end, the ONAT signed an agreement with the Directorate of Identification, Immigration and Immigration (DIIE) of the Ministry of the Interior, protected by Law No. 113 of the Tax System.
The legal norm also empowers the ONAT to impose sanctions on taxpayers who do not comply with the payment of their taxes, which range from surcharges and fines, toother non-pecuniary ones such as the seizure of bank accounts, the closure of establishments and the withdrawal of tax incentives.
If the person continues not to pay their debt, the Office can accuse them of the crime oftax evasion, which includes penalties of fines and imprisonment.
Last October, the government prevented a taxpayer from Sancti Spíritus from leaving the country whoowed nine million pesos in taxes.
