They extend tariff exemption on food, hygiene and medicines in Cuba and promise to supply MLC stores

The measure will be extended again, but the Cuban government promises to work on a sustained offer in stores in MLC.

Manuel Marrero Cruz announced this Wednesday a new extension oftariff exemption for the import of food, hygiene and medicines, although he warned that they will work to increase the offer in the stores in MLC so that Cubans can purchase what they need in the network of national stores.

The tariff exemption It was scheduled to expire on December 31, but it will not be like that, as reported by the prime minister during his speech in the Second Ordinary Period of Sessions of the X Legislature of the National Assembly of People's Power.

Regarding the exemption, Marrero opinedwhich - although it has helped many families - has also been used for resale at speculative prices.

The senior Cuban official warned that, in parallel, they will try to guarantee a sustained supply in stores.

"We will work seriously to find ways and financing to guarantee a sustained supply in stores, so that whoever wants to buy does not have to go abroad to import something that they can buy here," he said.

Marrero also said that it is necessary,"First of all, guarantee a stable supply in stores in foreign currency, if we want to maintain and subsequently increase the proposals of the network of national stores."

The prime minister stressed that the vision of the Cuban Government "is not at all to dollarize the economy" and that, on the contrary, "a strong de-dollarization program has been approved."

"But, to reach that goal, we have to go through partial dollarizations that allow us to raise or increase a group of currencies to be able to put them to benefit the economic and social development of the country," he added.

The tariff exemption on non-commercial imports of food, medicines and hygieneIt was first approved in July 2021, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and immediately after the 11J protests. Since then, the extension cycle has been maintained, closing in the months of June and December.

In June of this year, the extension included new benefits for shipments and unaccompanied luggage, also allowing "the importation of medical supplies, expanding the possibilities as a complement to medications and which may be accessories or equipment that have to do with the treatment of bedridden people.

Other products linked to health care were also incorporated that do not have technical and medical regulations and that have specific quality control approvals carried out by the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices.
