The year 2023 was the hottest in Cuba since 1951,reported the Climate Center of the Institute of Meteorology.

In this year that has just ended, a temperature was recorded 1.38 degrees Celsius above the historical average of that variable, the information states.

Likewise, 91 maximum temperature records were established and July classified as the warmest month of the period 1951-2023.

In addition, the percentage of warm nights was the highest since 1980 for the months of July, August and November in most reference stations,

For its part, the percentage of warm days prevailed in much of the country during the year, especially in July and November.

The especially hot temperatures of 2023 are related to global warming associated with climate change and the influence of the current ENSO (El Niño/Southern Oscillation) event, established since June and which, throughout December, continued to cause a overheating of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean, saidGranma the master's degree Idelmis González, from that center.

Most models predict that this complex ocean-atmosphere interaction process will persist at least until the end of next spring, potentially reaching the range of a strong event between February and March, the specialist added.

The Climate Center of the Institute of Meteorology monitors the evolution of ENSO, which impacts the island with greater intensity in the January-April quarter, more pronounced in February and March.

On August 10, the Casablanca meteorological station, in Havana, set a maximum of 37 degrees Celsius, a figure that constituteda record for that month in the entire province for more than a hundred years.
