Ukraine sinks Russian warship in Black Sea

The small missile boat valued at between $60 and $70 million took direct hits to the hull causing damage, rolled toward the stern and sank.

Ukraine sank a Russian warship in the Black Sea in a special operation off Russian-occupied Crimea, according to Ukrainian Military Intelligence, which released a video of the moment of impact, which was followed by a large explosion.

"Fighters of the special unit 'Group 13' of DI_Ukraine destroyed the Ivanovets missile corvette of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. As a result of several direct hits to the hull, the corvette was damaged, rolled to the stern and sank" , revealed the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine on its Twitter account.

"The value of the ship is approximately between 60 and 70 million dollars," he added.

Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate said the ship was destroyed in Lake Donuzlav, a saltwater bay on the western side of the Crimean peninsula where a naval base is located.

"As a result of a series of direct hits to the hull, the Russian ship suffered damage incompatible with further movement: the Ivanovets tilted towards the stern and sank," he detailed on his Telegram channel.

A Foreign Ministry official called the attack "stunning."

"At 03:45 [01:45 GMT] the first impact occurred and at 04:00 the entire crew was already evacuated. So there was no chance for this ship to be saved," Olexander Scherba toldBBC.
