Russian tourists denounce poor service after flight delay at Cayo Coco airport

The delay was due to a breakdown of the tanker truck transporting fuel to the Cuban airport on the departure day of flight N4 552 Cayo Coco – Moscow, Russian media reported.

A relative of Russian tourists who were stranded at the Cayo Coco Airport, in Ciego de Ávila, reported mistreatment suffered by their relatives, due to the 18-hour delay that a plane had on its route from this town to Moscow.

"They didn't give them water for a long time and they didn't tell him what was happening," he explains to the Russian portal. Belgorod No. 1, its subscriber Dmitry whose family was among those affected by the delay of this flight.

“At 3 in the morning we checked into the hotel and at seven they told us to get on the bus. In the video there is a moment of unrest, because they did not feed or say anything,” said a resident of Belgorod, a city about 40 km north of the border with Ukraine.

The airline plane Northwind Airlines returned to Moscow at approximately 09:30 in the morning of this Saturday, February 10, 18 hours later than the time indicated in the schedule, as shown by the data from the online scoreboard of FlightAware.

Artyom Korenyako, spokesperson for Rosaviatsiya, wrote on his Telegram channel that the flight delay occurred "due to a breakdown of the tanker transporting fuel to the Cuban airport on the departure day of flight N4 552 Cayo Coco - Moscow."

The airline's press service also explained that they were “waiting for the fuel to arrive from Havana; Furthermore, according to the regulations, the crew must rest.”

According to TourDom.ru who contacted aviation experts about the flight delay, said that “we can assume that at the Cayo Coco airport there was an accidental failure with the jet fuel: after all, this airfield is not the main one, difference from Havana.”

However, they described the incident as systemic. During the entire period of flights to Cuba, Russian airlines have not encountered such problems, they added.

At the end of 2023, A Russian tourist and blogger recounted her 16-day stay at the five-star hotel in Varadero, Iberostar Laguna Azul., an experience that he described as “difficult”, and that he decided to accompany with some advice for those who are willing to face a similar adventure.

Without a tip you are nothing”, was the first of a long list of recommendations that the author of the blog "Traveling with a Camera" gave her readers.

The blogger assured that in Cuba "the cult of tips has risen to a kind of savage level," and that is why she invited people to leave "dollars or gifts" everywhere as the only way to receive a minimally decent service.

These events occur after a year in which despite a general increase in the arrival of travelers in 2023, with almost 3.2 million visitors (including nationals), Cuba failed to surpass the mark of 3 million foreign tourists, according to the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI).

This situation contrasts with the aspirations of the Cuban regime, which estimated the influx of international tourists for last year at more than 3 million. It also contrasts with the tourism performance of its neighbors in the region.
