Cuban Diorges Escobar wins silver medal in hands free at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Cairo

That medal gives the Cuban 25 additional points that strengthen his position in his next competition and bring him closer to qualifying for the Paris Olympics.

The Cuban guyDiorges Escobarwon a silver medal in the hands-free specialty at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup held in Cairo, Egypt.

Diorges, double Central American champion of San Salvador 2023, reached 13,900 points in the final competition on Saturday, only surpassed by the South Korean Sunghyun Ryu, who scored 14,070, and a very short distance from the Bulgarian Eddie Penev, who took the bronze with 13,800.

"We are all very happy. He worked very well and achieved one of the objectives that we have set for ourselves," he declared to the Cuban portal.JIT the national commissioner of discipline,Pedro Pablo Barrios.

The man from Sancti Spiritus reached the final with the lowest score of the eight finalists (5.5), but his great execution, without any penalty, guaranteed him a place on the podium.

"He felt very good spirits and that is key because of his personality. On Friday he could not advance to the finals on the fixed bar, nor on the parallel bars, and he knew that this hands-free final was his opportunity," said the manager.

The now runner-up is closer to qualifying for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in this device. (On the fixed bar he could only reach 15th place and 39th on the parallel bars).

Diorges plans to attend the World Cup in Cottbus, Germany, from February 22 to 25, and Doha, Qatar, from April 17 to 20.

The one in Cairo is the first Cup of the season. When all of them are concluded, the two best athletes of each apparatus who have not qualified for the Olympics will be entitled to a place in the Paris event.

We have to wait until the tournament in Doha concludes to know if the Cuban will have one of those two tickets.
