Lilia Peña Morales, the paternal grandmother of Jorge 'Jojo' Morales, has been placed on probation for ten years after pleading guilty for her involvement in the kidnapping of the minor in 2022.

The judicial decision was communicated in court on Thursday and imposes a strict restraining order regardingYanet Leal, the child's mother, and 'Jojo' himself, now 7 years old.

Jay White, the grandmother's defense lawyer, reported that his client accepts the mistake of having taken the child to Canada and has accepted the charges.

However, this resolution does not alleviate the fear ofYanet Leal, who states that she feels renewed anxiety for the safety of herself and her son following the recent release of her ex-mother-in-law.

The history of this complex case dates back to August 2022 whenJorge Gabriel Morales violated joint custody, refusing to hand 'Jojo' over to his mother.

This act unleashed asearch alert in Miami-Dade, followed by a succession of events that pointed to a planned escape to the north of the continent.

The escalation of the conflict included the detection of the van used by Morales in Maine and previous threats by the father about taking the boy "to heaven" before he turned 7, exacerbating fears ofYanet Leal for the integrity of his son.

After two months of agonizing uncertainty and tireless searching, a key sighting at a Walmart inCanada and citizen collaboration allowed 'Jojo' to be found safe and sound.

The cooperation of both American and Canadian law enforcement agencies was crucial in the successful rescue of the boy. The combined efforts included dog search techniques and cross-border surveillance.

The rescue of 'Jojo' moved theMiami community alreadyYanet Leal, who felt indescribable relief and gratitude upon being reunited with his son.

The relevance of autism played an ambiguous role in this story, protecting the child from the full understanding of the trauma experienced.

Despite the apparent acquittal ofLilia Peña Morales, who must reside in Orlando, his son Jorge Morales, continues to face charges and remains detained.

His next court date will be April 29, 2024, keeping attention on the resolution of a case that has exposed vulnerabilities in the system and the prevalence of custody conflicts that can escalate to international dimensions.
