The Mega Millions jackpot reached $893 million, the sixth largest jackpot in the history of tonight's drawing.
In astatement The Lottery institution said that "this colossal jackpot marks the sixth largest in the history of the game, and the expectation of approaching the $1 billion mark has further fueled euphoria among players."
The $893 million represents a total of $421.4 million in cash for the winner.
"Only five previous jackpots have surpassed this figure, including the current game record of $1.602 million, won in Florida on August 8," he noted.
The entity in charge of the draw points out that "since it was last won with two tickets in California on December 8, the jackpot has been constantly rising, keeping participants in suspense."
In addition to the jackpot, Mega Millions has eight additional prize levels.
HeLast March 15, the draw registered a total of 1,587,100 winning tickets at all levels.
Tonight's drawing will be at 11 p.m. ET in Atlanta, Georgia.

Tickets to participate in this exciting drawing are sold for $2 in 45 states, Washington, D.C. and the US Virgin Islands.
Players have the option to add the Megaplier for an additional $1, which allows non-jackpot prizes to be multiplied.
A portion of the revenue generated from the sale of each Mega Millions ticket goes to charitable causes and commissions from retailers in participating states.
Eight states, including Florida, do not charge income taxes on lottery winnings. They are California, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.
Mega Millions is the only lottery game to have awarded four jackpots exceeding $1 billion: in 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
