Pablo Iglesias' bar menu brings together names of many international communist figures.

The former vice president of the Spanish Government, Pablo Iglesias, founder and former leader of the Podemos Party, is in the news in the main media of the Iberian country for the opening of his bar “Taberna Garibaldi” and the curious thing about its menu are the names of the drinks.

Names like Fidel Mojito, Che Daiquiri, O Durruti Dry Martini, attract lovers of communist ideology in the middle of the Lavapiés neighborhood, in the Spanish capital, says an extensive report by ABC.

Founded together with the poet Sebastian Fiorilli and the singer-songwriter Carlos Avila, the Garibaldi Tavern (8 Ave María Street), aims to be a venue for concerts, book presentations, and poetry recitals, without losing its bar essence.

Review ABC that in itself “the name of the site draws attention”, since “it refers to the international Garibaldi Battalion, which fought in defense of the Second Republic during the Spanish civil war and was named in honor of the Italian politician and revolutionary Giuseppe Maria Garibaldi, one of the architects of the unification of Italy.”

The names of the drinks, set out in a letter that brings together various figures of the communist ideology, have names like:

  • Marcos Margarita
  • Fidel Mojito
  • What a Daiquiri
  • Mandela Zulu
  • Ludmila Vodka

Among the references are the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, the guerrilla Che Guevara, the leader of the Communist Party of Spain Dolores Ibárruri 'La Pasionaria', the anarchist Buenaventura Durruti, the South African president Nelson Mandela and the Marxist philosopher Antonio Gramsci.

In 2021, the then candidate of Unidas Podemos (UP), Pablo Iglesias, announced his retirement from politics and from all his positions after the electoral failure in the elections for the presidency of the Community of Madrid, in which he was running for his party.

Although Podemos improved its results by winning ten seats, three more than in 2019, the sum of the three left-wing formations fell far short of what was obtained by the conservative Popular Party (PP) of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and the extreme right. from Vox.

In 2022, An attempt by Iglesias to return to teaching did not go as expected. In July of that year, the former Podemos leader had announced that, after finishing his research at the UOC Open University of Catalonia, he had applied to teach in Journalism and also to return to teaching in Political Science.

However, the results of the selection process placed him in fifth place in the call for associate professor at the Faculty of Information Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid.
