Cuban-American Senator Bob Menéndez recently confirmed his not running for Democratic re-election this year for the state of New Jersey, although he did not close the door to do so independently, amidst the bribery accusations against him.
The presentation of Democratic applications in New Jersey closes next Monday, March 25 and to date the representative is registered for the primaries Andy Kim and the current first lady of the state Tammy Murphy.
"Unfortunately, the current accusations that I face, of which I am innocent and will prove it, will not allow me to have that type of dialogue and debate with political opponents who have already made it the cornerstone of their campaign," Menéndez said in a video posted to your account Youtube.
"New Jerseyans deserve better than that," he said.
Menéndez aspires for his exoneration to occur this summer, which will allow him to present himself as a candidate in the November general elections in the United States, taking into account that the deadline for independent registration is June 4.
It is not the first time that the Cuban-American senator has been involved in corruption scandals. In his last bid for re-election, he achieved a mistrial in 2017, which allowed him to maintain the support of the state party establishment in 2018.
However, this time his time would be tighter, in addition to not having the support of the strong sector of Democrats in the state.
In September 2023, Menéndez resigned as chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee after being charged with conspiracy to commit bribery and other charges.
The Democrat was charged with his wife for accepting bribes and use his influence to benefit three businessmen from his State and the government of Egypt.
The 69-year-old politician would have done certain favors in exchange for hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash as well as jewelry, a Mercedes-Benz, gold bars and mortgage payments on a home.
