The outstanding Cuban musician and composer,Edesio Alejandro, faces a great challenge since he moved to Madrid more than a year ago to receive medical treatment for prostate cancer.

Dealing with both his illness and nostalgia for his homeland, Edesio spoke withCuban Diary about his current situation and the pain that distance causes him.

"Cuba hurts me a lot, the distance hurts me a lot. I try to be as far away as I can from current events there because when you are sick it is better to be psychologically far away, but what happens in Cuba and the situation of the people bothers me." ", he expressed.

The Cuban-Spanish musician moved to Madrid in search of treatment for the prostate cancer he suffers from because he had been without access to medicine in Cuba for several months.

"I came because I have been living with prostate cancer for four years. Recently, the medicine that controls this cancer has run out in Cuba [...]. So I have to be here, I have no other choice. If I want to live, I have to be here," the artist revealed.

Despite the challenge he faces, Edesio Alejandro has found strength in his work, maintaining a positive attitude in the face of the changes he has had to make.

His participation in the final voting for the Oscars as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood resulted in an emotional balm during a difficult winter in the Spanish capital.

Edesio's career has not only been marked by his musical talent, but also by his creativity and resilience.

His fight against cancer has revealed the deficiencies of the Cuban health system. "The shortage of drugs in Cuba affected us like all Cubans [...]. Medicines that were manufactured in Cuba are no longer manufactured," he expresses concern.

Edesio emphasizes the importance of having a creative space and criticizes the impact of the health situation in Cuba. "I'm missing the experience. I'm missing my people, my photos, my books, all my things are missing," he commented.

Despite the financial obstacles and the lack of expected support in Spain, Edesio continues to fight to generate new projects and adds that he still retains hope and passion for his art.

The musician celebrated his 66th birthday on March 28, surrounded by his wife and a small group of good friends in Madrid. He hopes to be reunited with his son soon.
