Coyote arrested for transporting 10 Cuban immigrants in Guatemala

The Cubans were transferred to the border post in the Guatemalan municipality of Agua Caliente, near the border with Honduras.

The National Civil Police (PNC) of Guatemala arrested this Tuesday an individual identified as Samuel "N" who was transporting a 10 Cuban citizens.

The arrest of the coyote was made at kilometer 173.5 of the Inter-American Highway in the jurisdiction of the village of San Esteban, in the department of Chiquimula, the PNC reported in Facebook.

According to the official report, the 10 Cubans who were in irregular situation in the country they were transferred to the border post of the Guatemalan Migration Institute, in the municipality of Agua Caliente, located in the department of Esquipulas, near the border with Honduras.

Last March, Guatemalan authorities detained 18 Cuban migrants in an irregular situation who were traveling on a bus in the municipality of Cuilapa, at a distance of 65 km from the country's capital.

The Cubans were part of a group of 51 undocumented immigrants, among whom there were also 21 Ecuadorians, seven Dominicans and five Nepalese.

In mid-February, the Guatemalan authorities expelled a Cuban migrant who was illegal and was part of a group of 26 foreigners, from Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, Peru and other countries.

Until the second month of the year, at least 12 Cuban migrants died during the dangerous journey to the United States.

Last February 3 Nine Cubans died in a tragic accident in Guatemala, a 24-year-old young man lost his life during a sea crossing and two women died suddenly in Mexico.
