The prominent Cuban ballet teacher Ramona de Saá dies

Teacher Ramona de Saá Bello, one of the most notable figures of Dance Pedagogy in Cuba and the world, died in the early hours of this Wednesday at the age of 84.

The outstanding Ballet maître, disciple of Alicia Alonso and long-time director of the "Fernando Alonso" National Ballet School, leaves a legacy that "goes beyond the artistic; she is and will always be an example of dedication, of moral strength and ethics, simplicity and altruism," highlighted the official newspaper Granma, which does not specify the cause of death.

Likewise, she points out that in 2000 she was awarded the Honoris Causa Doctorate in Art and the National Prize for Artistic Education in 2002, in recognition of her trajectory of the maitre d' in her 45 years link with ballet teaching in Cuba and his contributions to the Cuban Ballet School.

She was also an Adjunct Professor at the Higher Institute of Art (ISA) and a methodologist at the National Center for Art Schools (CNEArt).

The Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta regretted the news through his Facebook profile "Acosta Danza", where he states that De Saá is "one of the most important names in Cuban dance. His work is in the blood that beats in the best of the ballet of our country of the last 50 years".

"For Carlos Acosta, Ramona de Saá will always be an essential part of his professional and human education. That is why he considers her his second mother. Ramona de Saá Bello was one of the most notable figures of Dance Pedagogy in the contemporary world. Recognized internationally, he will be among the main forgers of the current Dance teaching system in Cuba," the publication states.

It should be noted that since February 2017, the main rehearsal room of the Acosta Danza company bears the name of Maestro Ramona de Saá, who was born in Havana on July 23, 1939.

She was a founding dancer of the National Ballet of Cuba, she became one of its main young figures along with Loipa Araujo, Mirta Plá, Josefina Méndez, Aurora Bosch and Margarita de Saa and reached the rank of soloist.

Under the direction of Fernando Alonso, he founded the Ballet School of the National School of Art, of which he assumed its direction.

She was the promoter and founder of the Dance Art Course of the Higher Institute of Art.

He worked in several countries such as Angola, Argentina, Bulgaria, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Italy, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, the former USSR, Spain and Venezuela.

By decision of the family, the remains of Ramona de Saá Bello will be cremated.

The Cuban regime announced that a posthumous tribute will be held in honor of the life and legacy of this outstanding dancer.

In his X profile, President Miguel Díaz-Canel regretted the death of the artist.
