The administrationBiden is studying legalizing immigrants in an irregular situation who are married to US citizens.
Sources who chose to remain anonymous revealed to theWall Street Journal that the White House is considering providing temporary legal status and work permits to illegal immigrants if they are married to Americans.
It is an action that numerous Democratic legislators and immigrant advocacy groups have fought for and that could win points for Democrats in the November elections.
The government is also studying the possible use of "parole in place" for spouses of US citizens.
"Temporary status would provide access to work permits and potentially a path to citizenship. No action is imminent or finalized," the sources clarified.
A White House spokesperson said the administration "is constantly evaluating potential policy options," without providing details.
"The administration remains committed to ensuring that those who are eligible for assistance can receive it quickly and to building an immigration system that is fairer and more humane," he added.
Helawyer Mayron Gallardo commented to journalist Mario J. Pentón that if this measure is approved, it would benefit Cubans in that situation.
"It is very clear that once they obtain thatparole, they can apply to the Cuban Adjustment Act after a year and a day," he said, adding that many people already have residency in process, "which would mean sending evidence with the sayingparole in place".
It will also help immigrants of other nationalities, because "it will give them a work permit and, eventually, the possibility of obtaining residency in the United States."
According to data from the advocacy organization FWD.us cited byReuters, 1.1 million immigrants who are in the United States illegally are married to American citizens.
Many of them have been in the country for decades, where they have a stable marriage and have started a family.
