Perceptible seismic events reported in Holguín and Matanzas

In the afternoon an earthquake and several aftershocks were recorded in Santa Martha and Varadero.

The National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS) of Cuba reported that this Wednesday several perceptible seismic events have been reported in the provinces of Holguín and Matanzas.

A report issued at 10:00 am this Wednesday states that at 09:13 am an earthquake of magnitude 3.0 on the Richter scale occurred at coordinates 20,632 degrees north latitude and -74,859 degrees west longitude, at a depth of 5.0 km.

That earthquake was located 5.0 km east southeast of Moa, in Holguín, with no material or human damage reported.

Likewise, at noon this Wednesday a slight tremor of 2.9 magnitude on the Richter scale was recorded that was noticeable in the town of Santa Martha and in the spa city of Varadero.

Around 3:00 pm, residents in those territories reported having felt a slight aftershock, which was confirmed by CENAIS.

At least 12 minutes later, another aftershock of 2.8 degrees occurred, the entity said.

This replica was located 8 km west of Varadero, with a depth of 5km, being noticeable to several inhabitants of the area.

Also on Monday, a small magnitude earthquake was noticeable in the provinces of Guantánamo and Santiago de Cuba, with no material or human damage reported.

It was the third earthquake that was noticeable in Cuba so far in 2024. The previous one was also recorded in the same area on March 23 at around 11:46 in the morning, when CENAIS confirmed that it was noticeable in Caimanera and several locations in Santiago de Cuba.

In 2023, CENAIS recorded 14 perceptible earthquakes on the Island, most of them located in Eastern Cuba.
