The provincial court of Pinar del Río imposed up to eight years in prison for five young people under 20 years of age who assaulted people armed with machetes.

The oral and public trial took place on April 30. To the accused They were charged with the crime of robbery with violence and intimidation of people.

The five defendants, who were in provisional prison, They were between 16 and 19 years old at the time of the crimes..

The robberies occurred in the early hours of April 4 and 5, 2023, on Borrego and Colón avenues in the city of Pinar del Río.

According to the newspaper report Guerrilla, quoted by Cubadebate, the criminals, with hoods over their faces and armed with machetes and wood, They attacked six young people studying at the university and took their valuable belongings, "causing terror in those affected."

The actions committed "caused a regime of certain terror in the population, especially university students." These acts, the note states, are "incompatible with the principles of citizen tranquility of which Cuba - it alleges - is the standard bearer."

The authorities presume that the court took into account the age of the accused, all very young, to impose the sanction, which could have been more severe, since the Penal Code establishes sentences of eight to 20 years of deprivation of liberty for this crime.

On the other hand, the information adds that the judges analyzed the violation of heritage that the robberies meant, especially in these times of economic crisis, and that it is a multi-offensive crime, because it also attacks bodily integrity.

Last week, the official press reported a sanction of 30 years in prison imposed by the provincial court of Havana on the author of a murder, in an event linked to an illegal departure from the country in which other crimes were committed.

According to a report broadcast on the television news, a body was found last year in the Boyeros municipality, with signs of having been murdered with knives.

The Police determined that the crime had as its background an illegal departure from the country organized by four people who were supposed to build a rustic boat. The victim regretted giving up the car that would be used in the transfer and was murdered.

At the trial, in addition to the person accused of murder, four other subjects received sanctions of between 10 and 13 years in prison for human trafficking.

In March, a high Official from the Attorney General's Office denied that criminal violence has increased in Cuba, which includes the crimes of murder, manslaughter, injuries, robbery with violence and sexual assault.

Beatriz de la Peña La O, head of the Investigation Department of the Directorate of Criminal Proceedings, tried to divert attention to social networks and their ability to provide information with a greater reach.

According to the prosecutor, there is a false perception that there are more crimes since the networks give greater visibility to the facts and the number of Internet users has grown.
